Smack Magazine Internship Program
Smack Magazine Campus is an online magazine written exclusively by college students, and we’re looking for student writers for the fall 2024 semester.
We’re looking for talented student writers and editors who are passionate about not only the college experience but also the college lifestyle. As a staff writer for Smack Campus Magazine, you will capture campus life for current and prospective students through weekly entertaining articles. As an editorial leader, you will learn what it takes to inspire a team.
The Smack Campus Magazine Street Program
The Smack Campus Magazine Street Program is a two-year journalism internship divided into four semesters. Students receive feedback from both their news desk and the editing team, and the critique will focus on the technicality of their craft to improve their skills as journalists.
First Semester Street Team Support (For Credit/Experience)
Students will focus on sharpening their research, interview, and writing skills and gain a thorough understanding of news and publication operations through a series of assignments as well as editor-led team critiques. Students will work closely with our editors and seasoned mentors to improve their technical writing skills and uncover their unique voices.
Second Semester Street Team Support (For Credit/Experience)
Staff writers write weekly and promote their articles via social media. Interns will be assigned to a news desk with several other students, all of whom will meet weekly via videoconference to review members of the group’s pieces. In addition, students will attend one-on-one meetings with their editor. The position is 3 to 10 hours a week, and interns will submit one article of 1,000 words and four article pitches for the next week to the editorial team. We welcome applicants from all majors. Previous writing experience for a college-level publication is a plus but not necessary. What you write about is entirely up to you, though creative, intelligent ideas are expected.
Third Semester Street Team (Paid)*
Staff writers learn the art of video journalism via social media and other online platforms. Students will familiarize themselves with the technology and methodology of the digital publishing industry and work with their assigned news desk team to produce video content such as news, sports, reviews, interviews, and subject series in support of Smack Media Group publications.
Fourth Semester Publication Contributor (Paid)*
After completing the Smack Magazine Internships program, students may be assigned as staff writers in one or several online and print publications: Smack Magazine, Smack Magazine regional edition, Smack Urban, Smack En Español, Pussa Magazine, and Smack Folks Magazine. Students will be compensated by the article submitted or hourly.
